Convocation, full of extravagant caps, begins new chapter in September sun

Under a hot September sun, a Longwood tradition began a new chapter.

Convocation, an annual rite at Longwood, marks the formal beginning of the academic year and serves as a showcase for intricate displays on graduation caps - some of which reach alarmingly precarious heights. 

The ceremony was held outside for the first time in Longwood's history, and, with a high reaching 90 degrees, more than a few jokes circulated the black-robed crowd, some of them making their way to the stage. Full Story.

Alumni Spotlight: Longwood alumna's new coffehouse in Farmville is successful addition to Main Street

It's not unusual for people to return to their college town after graduating. Few, however, open a business a few blocks from campus.  

That's what Jennifer Mattox '00 has done--and a lot of Longwood faculty, staff and students couldn't be happier.

Mattox and her husband, Jason, opened Uptown Coffee Cafe' at 236 N. Main St. on Aug. 15.  Business at the coffee and sandwich shop--the second Uptown Coffee Cafe' opening by the couple-- is booming. Full Story.
