ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
October 2014

Johnice Brown MS '94

1. Where did you receive your undergraduate degree, and what encouraged you to choose Longwood University to get your Master's degree? B.A. degree from University of Virginia. The Community and College Counseling Master’s program was compatible with my interest in working at the college level. Also, I received a graduate assistantship position.

2. How did you come about working at Longwood?  I completed an internship in the undergraduate admissions office.  Later, after working a few years in the private sector, I accepted an offer to work in the undergraduate admissions office.

3. What are your responsibilities as the Director of Undergraduate Recruitment? Manage the recruitment of prospective freshmen and transfers to Longwood that include but is not limited to visiting high schools and community colleges, attending college fairs, and working with prospective students and parents throughout the recruitment process.

4. What is your favorite part about working in the Admissions Office? I love working with prospective students as they make one of the most important decisions in their life in the pursuit of their postsecondary education.  It's exciting to hear prospective students talk about their goals and aspirations and to respond how Longwood's academics and campus life can serve as the foundation to their future.

5. When you are recruiting students, what is your favorite aspect of Longwood to tell them about?   The dedicated faculty and staff is truly what makes Longwood special and something I experienced as a graduate student.

6. What type of advice/information do you give to students who are looking to attend Longwood?  Schedule a visit to see our beautiful campus, meet our admissions staff and current students.  There are several opportunities to attend scheduled weekday and weekend information sessions and tours.   Contact the admissions office if you have questions; our staff is eager to assist.

7. What is your favorite experience at Longwood, either as a staff member or during your time as a graduate student?  There have been many great experiences but one that stands out is Rock the Block. What a great occasion for the campus and community to come together and offer a fun and festive welcome to new and returning students.
