ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
July 2014
Edona White Stanley  '95 & family

You recently finished a term on the Alumni Board.  Can you tell us about your experience serving on the board?
I can't believe how fast my three-year term passed.  What an amazing experience and honor to serve on the board.  Every time I stepped foot back on campus  my love for the school was re-energized.  I am thrilled with how far the university has come since the years I attended.  And even more so to where it is going.  I wish all alum could experience the history and upcoming changes by being on the board.  The insight and connection to the university is awesome.

What advice would you give to our upcoming seniors?
Take on a younger class-man as a mentor or friend.  Show him/her the things you love about Longwood and help shape their  experience.  Use your educational, personal and social experiences to help him/her adjust and make the most out of his/her days at Longwood.

Why would you encourage prospective students to consider selecting Longwood?
If you're looking for a school that makes you feel at home with class sizes so small you have an actual conversation with your professor or a school where you know more people than you don't - then choose Longwood.  This university is making it's mark among other universities and you want to be a part of it.  With it's rich history to go alongside with it's innovative way of growing with the students, Longwood should be your choice.

Who was your favorite professor & why?
Dr. Carkenord.  He made learning fun!  He was engaging, listened to your opinions and made you think outside your comfort zone.

What Longwood tradition is your favorite? Why?
Sorority Walk was my favorite tradition.  Seeing all the women welcome the new initiates is such an uplifting ceremony.  As a new initiate you are literally swarmed and enveloped into the sisterhood.  Joining the Kappa Deltas that day is one I'll never forget!

If you could relive one event you attended at Longwood, what would it be and why?
I can't remember what the entertainer's name was, but my freshman year a hypnotist performed for the school.  It was my first all-school event.  It was hilarious and entertaining and it made me feel like I was becoming part of something special as all classes joined in on the fun.  It was a fantastic night!  I know you early to mid 90's graduates remember with me!!!

Thank you Longwood for giving me four amazing years!  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.  The friendships and memories made are everlasting.  And most of all giving me the opportunity to meet my husband and fellow alum, Richard.
